Clare Lang @ The Family Dog

Which pet service/s do you offer?
Dog training & Behaviour consultations - Behaviour consultations for a range of issues - 1-to-1 and group training for puppies and adult dogs. - Home visits. - Sessions to prepare a dog for the arrival of a new baby. - Rescue Dog 'Welcome Home' Visits.
If you offer dog sitting or walking, please tell us some specifics.
-
What are your opening hours?
Flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends.
How long have you run your business for (in months or years)?
-
What type of pet/s do you have yourself?
A 5 year old male Spaniel-Cross (a rescue dog who was picked up a stray).
Do you have any recommendations to other pet owners?
Here are my top 10 training tips. See my website for more details! (1) Have fun. If you have fun training your dog then he too will enjoy his training.
(2) If you get frustrated, take a break. If you find that a training session is not going well and that you are getting frustrated or angry, it is best to take a break and try again later.
(3) Be more interesting to your dog than the distractions around you. (4) Find out what motivates your dog. Different dogs are motivated by different types of rewards.
(5) Don’t ask your dog to do something if you don’t have his attention. Get his attention first and then ask him.
(6) Be consistent. A dog will learn much more quickly and reliably if you are consistent with him.
(7) Practise little & often. Training can be tiring for your dog, especially if he is a young puppy or a rescue dog that is not used to training, so keep your sessions short.
(8) Reward him when he gets it right, ignore him when he gets it wrong. You can help your dog to learn quickly: when he gets something right, reward and praise him immediately; when his behaviour is less acceptable, ignore it and wait for something better. (9) Practise your training in different places. Dogs do not generalise easily.
(10) Think like a dog. The more you can understand how dogs think and communicate, the more successful your training will be.
Do you have any dreams for the future?
